Your Ultimate 10-Day Italy Itinerary — From North to South

Italy rewards a north-to-south progression, letting travelers move from alpine lakes and Renaissance cities through rolling hills to ancient ruins and Mediterranean coastlines. This 10-day route balances iconic sights with quieter moments, using efficient trains to connect regions without excessive fatigue.

Days 1–3 center on Venice and its lagoon. Arrive by train or flight, then spend the first day wandering Cannaregio and Dorsoduro neighborhoods away from main crowds. Ride a vaporetto along the Grand Canal at sunset, visit the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, and eat cicchetti in small bacari. Day two covers St. Mark’s Square, the Basilica, and Doge’s Palace—book timed entries early. On day three, take a morning boat to Murano for glass demonstrations and Burano for colorful houses and lace shops before returning to Venice for a final evening walk.

Days 4–6 shift to Florence and Tuscany. The high-speed train from Venice reaches Florence in about two hours. Base here for three nights. Explore the Duomo complex, Uffizi Gallery (pre-book), and Accademia for Michelangelo’s David on day four. Day five ventures into the countryside—rent a car or join a small-group tour to Siena’s shell-shaped piazza and San Gimignano’s medieval towers, stopping at a family-run winery for Chianti tasting. Return to Florence for day six: climb the Duomo dome for city views, cross Ponte Vecchio, and spend the evening in Oltrarno’s artisan workshops and trattorias.

Days 7–10 focus on Rome with a brief coastal detour. Train to Rome takes under two hours. Days seven and eight cover the ancient core: Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill (combined ticket), Pantheon, and Trevi Fountain. Walk to Campo de’ Fiori market in the morning and Trastevere for dinner. On day nine, take a regional train to Ostia Antica—Rome’s well-preserved port ruins offer mosaics, theaters, and baths with far fewer visitors than central sites. Return for a relaxed final evening. Day ten allows time for the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica before departure—start early to beat lines.

This itinerary uses Italy’s rail network effectively, leaves breathing room for meals and wandering, and mixes must-sees with regional flavor. Adjust pacing based on energy—Italy reveals itself best when savored slowly.
